Craft Meets Fashion, Xllullan
The designer label Xllullan features modern throwbacks as well as retro and edgy styles. Luxury meets practicality in the designs utilizing Italian and French textiles. Many of the artistic aspects of this brand are drawn from literature, film and visual arts. Nature, which is prominently featured is also matched against the manufactured feel of metallic materials.
What’s the story behind Xlullan?
The head designer Xuanxuan Li (Xuan) was born and raised in Qingdao (Tsingtao), a coastal city in Shandong Province, China. She pursued her education and career in fashion in New York, while majoring in Fashion Design at Parsons and Visual Arts at Eugene Lang.
She frequently travels the whole world in search of new fabrics - all of our designs are made from Italian and French textiles.
Commenting on her inspiration, she states "at the core of my creative vision lies the idea 'craft meets fashion'." Her goal is to build a visual story around both fashionable and wearable art by using unconventional combinations of materials and innovative fabric treatment techniques. Through the exploration of various fabric manipulations and handmade construction, she aims to create everything from organic textures to architectural silhouettes.
Many of the artistic aspects of this brand are drawn from literature, film and visual arts. Nature, which is prominently featured is also matched against manufactured feel of metallic materials. All the pieces are handcrafted, and all the pieces are limited editions.
For every collection we have a film we put out to really demonstrate and tell the story in greater detail - this is also why we call the collections Volumes, and within each volume we have capsules, and within these we have Acts.
Are there any upcoming projects?
We are currently working on our Spring Summer collection, which was inspired by Cuba. So we’re drawing inspiration from the vintage cars and we’re going to be having a lot of bright colors.
Who is a typical Xllullan customer?
She is a more mature customer, aged between 26 to 46. We also have a big clientele in the Middle East because our clothing is very similar to modest wear.
How would you describe the Xllullan brand?
I would define it as being modern and throwbacks. A lot of the silhouettes look vintage but there are updates to them. It's also all about the detail with us. The slight details in all the designs Xuanxuan creates makes everything even more unique.
