Clothes With a New Attitude - Melissa Kheng

Melissa Kheng

Fashion Designer

How did you get into fashion design?

I’ve always been fascinated by the creative aspect of fashion. I knew I was never interested in the idea of working in a regular 9-5 job. I believe in working on something that you have a passion for so you don’t have to 'work' in your lifetime.

As a designer, what are your major influences?

I'm influenced by music, films, and art. These three elements evoke my creative process. I wake up to it and go to bed with it.

What is your design philosophy?

My design philosophy is that I believe each designed garment will be a foundation of future fashion, expressing these ideals through authentic craftsmanship and unique originality.

Tell us about your recent Against All Odds collection

Inspired by Bosozoku subculture, they are the spirit of rebellion and independent risk takers and full of life with dedication to the sublime intensity of youth. The healthy embodiment of youth and expression of freedom. Through their dedication to sustaining their culture, it reminded me of the life of fishermen. They are people with dedication in what they are doing and faced different kinds of risk each day they set out to sea. And just like me, I believe in risk-taking that is how we can grow a designers.

Do you have any particular favorites from this collection?

I was really satisfied with the first look which was a leather last cut piece. The process of achieving it was not easy. Nevertheless, it pushed my boundaries as a designer to make my ideas come to life.

What are you currently working on?

Currently, I'm working on a new startup brand that goes beyond gender and age that will be revealed in September.

What can we expect from Melissa Kheng over the next few years?

Over the next few years, I will continue to work on my designs and continue to push functionality and form, pulling from various utilitarian components in terms of design and reworking wardrobe staples with progressive executions. Self-expression through fashion to promote one’s individuality.
