Glam, Alien, Unconventional - Kaila Powell Frasco
Kaila Powell Frasco
How did you get into fashion?
I went to college for fashion and costume design, but I’ve always been passionate about clothes. I was known for my crazy outfits in high school and got voted most unique my senior year!
Describe your aesthetic in three words
glam, alien, unconventional
What does the term “No Fimage” mean to you and how do you incorporate it in your designs?
“No Fimage” was a term I was taught as a kid at a summer camp. It means “No Fear of Image”, meaning not to care what people think of you. That was engraved in me starting at age 10. I even have it tattooed on my wrist! As far as my designs go, it helps me to not hold back on my imagination and creativity. Life is too short to worry about what people think of you. Don’t let anyone stop you from being exactly who you are.
As a designer, what are your main influences?
Absolutely music. Mainly glam rock and the 80s. I’m a huge fan of David Bowie and Prince. They are a huge inspiration to me.
What did you design for Lady Gaga?
Lady Gaga wore my helmet headpiece that I made out of real pennies and dollar bills.
You design a range of clothing styles, from dresses to rockstar clothes - what’s most interesting to work on?
Definitely, the pieces that I make out of unconventional materials. I really enjoy the process of sculpting something into wearable art.
Do you have any exciting current projects?
I just finished making a hand-painted blazer. It has purple glitter raindrops and is a dedication to Prince and his song Purple Rain.
What can we expect from Kaila Powell Frasco over the next few seasons?
What I really want to do is dress musicians rather than theater or film. It’s my dream to go on tour, travel the world with a band, and be in charge of designing/styling the outfits!
