German Precision's Influence on Fashion, HAUS VON M

Haus Von M

Fashion Designer

Rooted in German precision, HAUS VON M translates to House of M and brings to life the simplistic, modern style an ambitious woman’s lifestyle requires. The “M,” which is present in the logo, originates from the ancient and intricate Japanese art of origami, which fosters transformation, concealment and revelation. HAUS VON M is the combined vision of fashion industry veterans who graduated from the Parsons School of Design in New York City.

What’s the story behind Haus Von M?

In German, HAUS VON M translates to House of M. The “M,” which resembles a closed envelope, originates from the ancient and intricate Japanese art of origami, which fosters transformation, concealment and revelation. It is also a tale of two cities, of Berlin and New York City, and what it entails for the modern women on the go.

Tell us about the inspiration behind your FW18 collection

“I go so far as to think that you own the universe…

I want to do with you what spring does with the cherry trees.”

What Pablo Neruda wrote for Valentine’s Day in 1924 inspired HAUS VON M’s Fall/Winter 2018-19 women‘s collection to design pieces that carry hidden messages just like love poems to the smart and sophisticated modern business women.

I took inspiration from water, creating this wavy and flowy feel when she walks at the same time adding strength to the construction.

Do you have a favourite piece from this collection?

My favourite piece from this collection is the Dylan trench coat. It got featured on Vogue during Milan Fashion Week and this coat is an essential piece of “armour” for the typical “road warrior”. Actually, a lot of guys love it too. The fabric is Italian luxury wool with water and wind-proof layers making it the perfect travel piece. The sleek silhouette gives the wearer a professional look with character and strength while the durable fabric provides functionality. This is what you want AND what you need.

Describe the typical Haus Von M wearer?

She’s smart and sophisticated. She reads, she travels and she is a go-getter. She’s the cool lady on the road and nothing can stop her in career and in life, rain or shine.

What do you find to be the strongest influences for your designs?

My inspiration stems from strong female leaders and style icons but with romance at heart. The juxtaposition between strong and soft seen in the garment details represent the relationship between the strength and tenderness of a woman. The pieces delicately consider the balancing nature of Yin and Yang, which is also the influence from Eastern Philosophy but it is now interpreted in the modern Western cultural environment.

What can we expect from Haus Von M over the next few years?

This is definitely a very exciting time for HAUS VON M regarding its future plans. Following our SS19 collection, we are expecting to be an official name on the Paris Fashion Week calendar. We will also start to build partnerships with traditional retailers as well as direct-to-consumer channels. It is thrilling to see how this movement unfolds and how HAUS VON M is truly making a difference and filling the white space in the industry.
