Fashion Designer

How did you get into fashion?

I was always into fashion since I was a child. In secondary school, I was introduced to the world of fashion through magazines such as Vogue, Interview, i-D and Dazed & Confused and I became obsessed with fashion and everything about it ranging from models to fashion shows. After secondary school, I went to university for Computer Science only to drop out in 2 years because I realized that it wasn't what I wanted to do with my life. I enrolled in a part-time sewing course and learned how to sew and eventually started at a full-time school at Blanche Macdonald Centre in Vancouver. After graduating from Blanche Macdonald, I went to London for my Post Graduate Degree at London College of Fashion. Several months after graduating from LCF, I entered a competition held by a Victoria-based magazine and won the Emerging Designer of the Year award. The prize was the opportunity to create a 16 looks collection in 1.5 month and show at Vancouver Fashion Week which also marked the debut of my label.

As a designer, what are your major influences?

I am heavily inspired by contemporary arts, contemporary films and subcultures.

 What is your design philosophy?

To create unique pieces that are comfortable, wearable.

How would you describe the typical Alex S. Yu wearer?

The typical ALEX S. YU customer is someone who is bold, fashion forward and unique. They do not follow the mainstream trend and usually have a strong sense of individuality and style.

Tell us about your AW2018 ‘The Crimson Demur’ collection.

The AW2018 collection is titled The Crimson Demur. This is my eighth collection. The collection features both womenswear and menswear as well as introducing some unisex pieces after the success of the previous collection. This season, I dived into various Grimm’s fairy tales and was very fascinated by the tales as old as time. The gruesome and violent details in the stories were very different from the ones I had been accustomed to as a child.

The contrast of the two vastly different versions of the same story was used to create the collection, while introducing some more regal silhouettes and design details into the collection. This collection, I also used a variety of rich textiles, prints, knits and textures while maintaining the effortless sporty feminine vibe that is very much the ALEX S. YU trademark. Classic ALEX S. YU details such as ruffles, asymmetry and oversized silhouettes are also prominent throughout the collection to maintain the brand’s vibrant image. The Autumn Winter 2018 collection - The Crimson Demur - saw the creation of ALEX S. YU’s version of a modern-day princess.

Do you have any favourites from this collection?

My favourite pieces were the oversized satin bombers with my signature ruffle details.

What are you currently working on?

I am currently working on my Spring Summer 2019 collection. It is inspired by Satoshi Kon's film - The Perfect Blue. Also, this season I want to focus on furthering the wearability of my pieces.

What can we expect from Alex S. Yu over the next few years?

In the next few years I hope to expand the label, gain more retailers and show regularly at London Fashion Week.
