Central Saint Martins sweetheart, Christopher Kane
Christopher Kane, born in Scotland in 1982, attended Central Saint Martins for both his BA and MA in womenswear. His big break came when he won the hearts of the judges at the Central Saint Martins Final MA Fashion Show (see below). His collection featuring multicoloured short dresses made from lace and nylon, won the Harrods Design award of £1500 and as a result of the award, his dresses were shipped directly to the Harrods window fronts to be admired by the thousands of people passing by.
Almost instantly after graduating from Central Saint Martins, Kane started his own label along with his sister Tammy Kane. Although she is also an official creative director of Christopher Kane, she is more focused on the financial side of the business.
In 2013, Kane decided that in order to expand his brand, he would need an investor. "As a small business, there's only so far you can go" he said. When Kane met Francois-Henri Pinault, the CEO of Kering, the luxury conglomerate that owns brands such as Gucci, Alexander McQueen and Saint Laurent, he knew they were the right fit for them. Kering now owns 51% of the Christopher Kane brand.
Christopher Kane's collections are distributed in over 30 countries and the brand has expanded from its womenswear focus into menswear and footwear. The collections are not only available online, but also in his first flagship store located on Mount Street in Mayfair, London.
Christopher Kane has been recognised internationally for his fashion talents. He has won the BFC British Collection of the Year Award, BFC/Vogue Designer Fashion Fund and has been named the Scottish Designer of the Year twice.
Highlights of his career include; creating a limited-edition jewellery collection for Swarovski, launching three capsule collections for Topshop and designing for Versus Versace.
However, considering it has only been 10 years since Kane graduated from Central Saint Martins, we are sure he will continue to amaze us with his fashion conquests.
